We had heard of the Creux de Glace as a cheese speciality produced in Corgémont, but we had no idea that it existed. That autumn, we had wanted to go to the Chasseral, but to vary things a bit, we decided to start from the Chasseral Hotel and make a loop that would take us later to the top. When we looked at the map more closely, we realised that there was a route that exactly followed what we had planned to do: the Chasseral Path.
We started from the Chasseral Hotel car park and went down towards the Pré aux Auges. As we were completely in the shade and it was already late autumn, it was very cold. It was only when we got to the Pré aux Auges that we found the sun again. This is the first flat area above the very narrow Combe Grède. But this time, instead of going into the Combe Grède, we followed a trail that runs along the edge above the cliffs. Even though the feeling is quite airy, the ledge on which you walk is wide. However, you still must be careful not to dislodge any stones, as the Combe Grède route is directly below.
Further on, we reached the large, flat pasture area of Limes and the Métairie de Meuringue. The name of this farmhouse makes you think of meringue, a very well-known dessert. However, the name is related to the village of Mörigen, which is located on the shores of Lake Bienne.
A little further on, we saw a sign for the Creux de Glace. Even though it is a small detour, it is worth it. That is how we went to see the entrance to this chasm, which was used in the past to keep the cheese produced in the farmhouses cool before it was taken down to the valley. After the Creux de Glace, we went down to a small valley that leads up to the Métairie du Milieu. From there, we followed the route up to the Vacherie de Nods and Les Roches, which are not far from the top of the Chasseral. There, the contrast was strong, as we had been hiking almost alone up to that point, and suddenly we found ourselves in a very busy area.
