The Stockhorn region is a beautiful place with two mountain lakes, the Hinderstockensee and the Oberstockensee. A cable car takes you to a point just above the Hinderstockensee, from where a second cable car takes you to the Stockhorn. The area is very popular because it is so beautiful and the view from the Stockhorn is so extensive. This is especially true because there is a possibility to fish in the Hinderstockensee. Therefore, it is sometimes worth visiting the area outside of the high season.
We chose to go there in mid-October when the weather was forecast to be very nice. We took the cable car up to Chrindi, from where we followed the marked trail around the lake and up to Vorderstocke. From there, we continued to climb up to the small peak next to the Pfaffli. The view from there is stunning.
For the descent, we followed the ridge, which is quite steep in places, down to the Oberi Looherehütte. We wondered whether it would be possible to climb the Looherehürli. It is possible, but the conditions there would have made the climb very difficult, as the ground was very wet.
We followed the trail down from the Oberi Loohere and that makes several switchbacks before crossing under the Looherehürli. A little further down, the trail comes back a bit before reaching the pastures and, further down, a paved road. This road goes through Stigimaad and then makes a wide turn back towards the valley. A little further down, the trail goes down a rocky area and then you reach Weissenburgberg. From there, we followed the road to Moos, but instead of following it all the way, we took the marked trail that bypasses the road and leads directly to Därstetten.
