The southern ramp of the Lötschberg

This is a destination I like to do again, as the views over the Rhône valley and the mountains of the Visp region are magnificent. Moreover, the route is not monotonous, as you often must go into the side valleys a bit to come out later.

Here, however, I had followed the trail of the southern ramp and not the Sun Trail route. The Sun Trail starts from the village of Hohtenn, whereas the former follows the tracks of the railway more or less close. I had also given up going down the Bisse de Stägeru via Lidu. The reason being that I wanted to see the bottom of the Jolibach valley, since the first time I went there, major construction works to protect against floods were underway and ruined the fun.

Also, instead of crossing the Bietschtal bridge, I wanted to go up a little to cross the natural bridge.

For the descent to Baltschieder, I wanted to follow the path officially marked on the maps. However, I made a mistake by following a path that was clearer, but which led to the road to Ausserberg. By the time I realized my mistake, I had already reached the road and did not want to go back up to the official trail. Also, the tall grasses along the trail were not cut, making the trails unattractive.

Originally, I had planned to walk to Visp. However, the heat didn’t help, and the bus schedule was favorable, so I took the bus to Baltschieder.

Route: Station Hohtenn – Ritzibodo – Naturbrücke – Riedgarto – Ausserberg – Baltschieder
Distance: 13Km
Altitude gain: 380 m
