From Biel to Douanne

The winters are no longer what they used to be. This winter, there was a lot of snow between Christmas and New Year, but starting from the second week of January, the thaw caused the snow to melt away. As a result, it was difficult to plan hikes, as there was no snow for snowshoeing in the Jura and the season was not yet over enough to go for a walk in spring conditions. Nevertheless, after checking the weather forecast and seeing that the stratus was not expected to cover the plateau, we decided to go for a short hike in the vineyards around Lake Biel.

We started at the Biel train station and followed the marked trail that leads to the Thielle and then to the lake. There, we were surprised to see that there were a lot of people out and about, as the temperatures were very mild. After walking along the shore of Lake Biel for a while, we crossed the cantonal road and climbed up a metal ladder to gain some height and avoid walking along the road. There are some beautiful viewpoints along this stretch of trail. A little further on, we crossed Vigneules and followed the marked trail that runs along the hillside, sometimes through the forest and sometimes through the vineyards. We then passed above Alfermée, Tüscherz and the Engelberg convent estate. Further on, we head down towards Twann, crossing the beautiful old town to reach the train station.

Route: Biel – Vigneules – Tüscherz – Douanne
Distance: 9.5km
Elevation gain: 230m
Duration: 3h
