The Niremont

The Niremont is an old acquaintance of mine. Indeed, I had already identified this peak as an interesting destination for a snowshoe hike a long time ago. I had made several beautiful winter hikes there. But it must be said that this was before the major climate changes. I also remember that once I had to work hard to make a trail in the snow, as there had been a lot of snowfall the days before. This time, I had planned to make the hike again with snowshoes. However, with the thaw at the beginning of January, the beautiful amount of snow we had had between Christmas and New Year had almost completely disappeared. Thus, the hike was made without snowshoes.

The Niremont is in front of the Moléson and although it is not as high as the latter, it is a good destination, as you are higher than the Swiss Plateau. Thus, you have a clear view of the Jura.

Its ascent through pastures is very pleasant. And it is very easy to make a loop, as was the case here. The starting point is under the Moille de Crey, at a small car park along the road to Rathvel. A long time ago, I used to park at the Frasse, but this is no longer possible because of the bus stop and the fact that some of the parking places are reserved for the restaurant.

From the Moille de Crey, you first must climb through pastures to the Grande Mollie and the Petit Niremont. Above this chalet, you arrive at the hump that represents the end of the big climb. From there, you just must cross a dip to reach the Niremont.

For the return, I chose to follow the ridge and a bit of the ski slope to reach another ridge leading to a small shelter near an alpine path. You just must follow this path to return to the Grande Mollie and then descend according to the ascent route.
